This year’s tournament will be a Division C Science Olympiad Invitational tournament held on February 18, 2023, in-person on the UMass Amherst campus.
Our tournament will run the same 21 main events as the Massachusetts State Science Olympiad. All main event conflicts will be the same as the state tournament. Trial events will be announced at a future date. We expect to provide individual homerooms for all competing schools.
Our tournament will also focus on being
hands-on. This means two big things for competing teams:
- The tournament will have a focus on build events, and
- Most non-build events will be run in a stations format.
More detailed information about how our tournament will be run can be found on
this information document.
- October 18: Registration opens
- November 22: Team notification and payment begins
- December 24: Payment deadline
- February 18: In-person tournament date
We encourage all individuals planning to be on campus to bring $15 for lunch! Our campus houses award-winning dining halls with accommodations to all dietary restrictions. For more information about UMass Dining, please visit their website
here.
Further information about individual events and any supplementary materials to bring will be released early to mid-December.

After much consideration from feedback provided by interested teams, we’ve decided to follow the same event schedule as states this year! We know that many teams in Massachusetts build themselves around the state’s events and event conflicts, and we hope to prepare all competitors regardless of experience by offering a tournament that runs in a similar format. We do have a couple key differences, however, so please take note of the tournament details and keep an eye out for further updates!
